Roadheaders open shield

Using this technique tunnels can be economically advanced in rock masses with an unconfined compressive strength of up to 80 Mpa. The excavation is made with a longitudinal cutting head equipped with round shaft chisels. The excavated material is removed via the spiral converyor.

The special flexibility of the Herrenknecht shields with particial face excavation becomes apparent in the opportunity to change the method of excavation rapidly.

Both the excavator and the roadheader can be installed on the same basic machine. The changeover requires little effort and can be implemented very quickly.
